Re: Pit bull kills 4-day old infant...

I've got a half boxer/half pit in my house. We will not leave our kids alone in the same room as the dog. He has been wonderful so far and we have had him since he was 4 weeks old so I also thinks it's all in how they are raised as well.

In Jacksonville, Florida a 4-day-old infant died when the family's pit bull attacked the baby on Sunday evening.

The incident is being investigated to determine how long the infant was left unsupervised. The baby's father says it was just a couple of seconds.

"'Our investigation will reveal if the incident was abuse, neglect or an accident,' said the DCF spokesman," according to CNN.

The official report will not be in for weeks. The investigators will determine if this is a case of neglect or abuse, or if the animal has a history of being aggressive.

The breed has a history of being aggressive, so why was it allowed in the house with a baby. This case enrages people on both sides, but the evidence is clearly mounted against the ownership of pit bulls.

Authorities have euthanized this pit bull. Some states have pit bulls categorized as vicious. If you try to get homeowners insurance they ask if you have a dog. If you say pit bull, be ready to be disconnected. If you say Golden Retriever the conversation will continue.

The parents of this four-day-old baby are suffering, but many concerned citizens would like this to be the last child killed or maimed by a pit bull.

Family's Pit Bull Kills 4 Day Old Infant | Gather
It never says that it was killed on purpose by biting, eating, or anything like that.
It just says a pitbull killed a 4 day old infant. Maybe the baby was laying on the couch, or in the floor with the family, the dog laid down and didn't realize it smothered the baby.
So, don't go throwing off on the dog just because of a history.
This could be one of those "we accidentally killed our baby, blame it on our pit"

Yes, the authorities had to euthanize the dog, but that has to be done when it's reported an animal kills someone.

But Spuds is a Bull Terrier, also originally a fighting dog, but at least their lines have been cleaned up to some degree by reputible breeders breeding for conformation and proper temperament rather than fighting skills.

Staffordshires are the big muscular breed, bred by people who want fighting dogs, dogs that look mean, tough dogs, status dogs. Their breeding has gone the opposite direction of the Bull Terrier.
The "good" Staffordshires are the ones you see in shows at Westminster, bred for conformity; aggressive dogs aren't bred. You cannot get a reliable staffordshire from a back yard breeder or puppy mill. Reckless breeding makes the matter so much worse.

I'll reiterate though, the pit isn't the only dog with the propensity to turn, and not all pits will act on that inbred instinct.

The dog in the Target commercials is a Bull Terrier too. Cute critter.
A Bull Terrier won Best In Show at Westminster a few years ago - good looking dog.

Yeah they are, just not my type of critter, although I do have a wired haired Jack Russell ( I know they are called something else by the AKC). Im more of a beagle fan or other hunting dog breeds.

    I'm a hound person myself.
My mom is a chihuahua person
My older sister is a Boston Terrier person.

To each his own! (even though dachshunds are the superior dog )

Re: Pit bull kills 4-day old infant...

Have you all seen what has happened to some of Michael Vick's dogs? I think only 2 had to be put down. These dogs were not only bred to be fighting dogs but WERE fighting dogs. several are in helping positions. one sits with kids at a library and is a reading dog. it sits with kids with reading problems and lets kids read to them. another is (i think) a dog that visits hospitals. I think one, which is considered maybe the best fighting dog on the property has a great new home. There is a book about the whole thing called LOST DOGS that the wife is reading. details all the good and bad stuff that happened.
now I'm not saying all the Vick dogs are amazing as many are still in "halfway" places being retrained to be pets.
